Just less than a week after the deaths of 254 villagers, the central government has fired the governor and vice governor of Shanxi Province. The villagers drowned in muddy iron ore waste that overflowed from the reservoir of an unlicensed mine, sweeping away cars and flooding homes.
Beijing’s rapid response to the accident is representative of an increasing commitment to work safety, as is Beijing’s choice for acting governor, Wang Jun. Wang is the director of the State Administration for work safety and headed up the rescue efforts at the accident site. Additionally, Beijing’s response to the accident also indicates an increasingly willingness to discipline party officials.
