Tetsuya Suetsugu: China risks Japan’s wrath rather than domestic ire

For China, committing a diplomatic blunder might have been safer than taking the political risk of going ahead with a meeting between Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi. On Monday, Wu suddenly canceled a meeting with Koizumi that was scheduled for that afternoon, citing “sudden duties.”

The Chinese leadership, led by President Hu Jintao, appears to have considered the meeting a political risk.
