NPC officials began deliberating two clauses in Hong Kong’s Basic Law on Saturday that set out how its chief executive and lawmakers are chosen. Critics fear that Beijing’s re-interpretation of these two clauses will ensure a more compliant legislature and stifle Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement. The concern is heightened by the fact that Hong Kong will hold legislative elections in September.
The U.S. State Department has voiced “strong support” for the Hong Kong people’s desire for democracy, electoral reform and universal suffrage. The Hong Kong government swiftly responded by criticizing the U.S. of meddling in its internal affairs.
