A ceremony celebrating China’s National Day in Hong Kong was marred on Saturday when activists protesting the Beijing government attempted to storm into the venue.
About 20 people, led by maverick lawmaker Leung Kwok-hung, were protesting Beijing’s Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989 on the fringes of the ceremony. They also demanded the Communist government “return power to the people”.
The protesters carried black banners that said “reverse the verdict of June 4th” as well as large plaques decorated with white flowers _ traditionally used in Chinese funerals.
