The story is a Chinese version of Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk, but this time digital signal processors (DSP) were being faked, rather than human embryonic stem cells.
Last Friday, for scientific fraud, Chen Jin, a 35-year-old former top computer scientist and professor at China’s famous Shanghai Jiao Tong University, was exempted of all his titles as dean of School of Microelectronics and Chang Jiang Scholar, which is given only to a select group of China’s best young scholars.
Chen successfully fooled the university, experts, and China’s ministries of technology and education for more than three years by faking Hanxin IV DSP chips. Last month, even while he was being investigated by a special panel assigned by the government, in a desperate move Chen still issued a batch of Hanxin V, which were also phony.
From the first suspicion, it took more than half a year for collaboration between a secret source and China’s media to reveal the truth. It was a suspense thriller with Chen having the advantage at the beginning, believing he would never get caught.
The news originally broke online, then more people offered information and the traditional media soon picked up the story.
