Emergency surgery on a leading activist for the rights of farmers displaced by China’s Three Gorges Dam appears to have saved his life but Fu Xiancai is unlikely ever to walk again. His neck was broken by unknown attackers as he walked home from a police interrogation on 8 June.
“He had another small operation but it looks like it will take six months for him to recover and he won’t be able to use his arms and legs. The outlook is not very hopeful,” said a friend.
News of the attack on Mr Fu prompted goodwill messages and offers of financial support from readers of this newspaper. He gave an interview to The Independent in March in which he told of his tireless efforts lobbying officials to secure compensation for some of the million people resettled to make way for the 185-metre-high dam, which opened last month.
