In a damning report published by the online edition of the People’s Daily, Pan Yue, deputy director of the State Environmental Protection Administration, said an environmental crisis could bring about an irreversible catastrophe for the Chinese people.
He said torrid economic growth could only be sustainable if the government achieved a balance of political reforms, social harmony and environmental protection. ”
