Attending a United Nations symposium on hydropower and sustainable development in Beijing yesterday, mainland officials said much hope had been placed on hydropower to help meet the nation’s rising demand for electricity.
In a paper submitted to the symposium, Minister of Water Resources Wang Shucheng predicted that construction of hydropower plants in China would peak in 20 to 25 years. More than 80 per cent of its water resources suitable to power generation remained untapped, he said.”
