DR HARRY BROADMAN has authored a book discussing the expanding trade between Africa and the Asian giants China and India. He was in Nairobi last week to launch Africa’s Silk Road: China and India’s New Economic Frontier.

Why do you think China and India are showing increased interest in trade with Africa?
For the past five years or so, there has been a tremendous acceleration in trade and investment by the two countries in Africa. This acceleration has largely been driven by investment and trade in oil.
However, this has now extended far beyond natural resources. There are investments in light manufacturing, sophisticated infrastructure, water services, telecommunications and textiles, among others.

How will the fact that China now gives aid to African countries affect the role of global financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund?
I think the rise of non-traditional donors such as China and India in Africa is welcome. There is so much work to be done in Africa that no single donor can claim a monopoly. With the entry of non-traditional donors, African countries need to harmonise how they deal with the donor community. It does not make sense to have three or four different donors funding the same programme. [Full Text]
