Bird flu whistle-blower detained, sparking fears of revenge – Jane Cai

From the South China Morning Post, via Asia Media:

A Jiangsu farmer who blew the whistle on a bird flu outbreak in Anhui in October has been detained by police, raising concerns that he is being punished for speaking out.

Lawyer Kong Weizhao said his client, Qiao Songju, was detained on November 25 on allegations of blackmail.

“I was told by police in Gaoyou [in Jiangsu] that he is involved in two cases. One is a vaccine case which took place two years ago. The other concerns the bird flu outbreak in Tianchang city, in neighbouring Anhui province,” Mr. Kong said.
