206 Million Online Newsreaders Explain China’s Anxiety For Control

From the Tibetan Review:

About 206 million Chinese, or 68.6 percent of China’s Internet users, use the web to get their main source of news, reported China’s official Xinhua news agency Dec 22, citing the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). This obviously explains why China is so anxious to control what’s available online. Releasing the figure in the Blue Book of China’s Economy (2009) report, Zhu Huaxin, author of the report, has said, “The year 2008 saw rapid development and wide application of the Internet in China.”
