China’s commodity futures traders are sporting big smiles these days, following a 36 per cent rise in total trading volume last year.

The futures boom reflects a continuing surge in demand for commodities, which has forced Chinese companies to increase their hedging activities.

Such is their scale and importance that China’s futures prices, particularly those for copper, now influence world prices.
