China says it is also willing to talk to Chen as long as he accepts the 1992 consensus, but that would be a political U-turn unacceptable to his core pro-independence supporters.
Despite their sharply differing views, Soong and Chen signed a 10-point consensus on cross-strait ties in February that the PFP chairman said will form the basis of his talks with Hu.
In that agreement, Chen pledged to maintain the status quo and not to take moves that would turn Taiwan’s de facto independence into formal independence.
