THE war of words across the Taiwan Strait – closer these past few days to a shooting war – is developing into a testing ground for the future of Asia. These are history wars on which lives depend. The big question, for Hu Jintao, too, is who will eventually prove on the wrong side.

At the centre of the storm is Taiwan’s nerdish lawyer of a leader, Chen Shui-bian, described this week by the furious media in the People’s Republic as selfish, immoral and worse.
