Given the difficulty of passing a recall motion against the president over a string of recent scandals, Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) legislators yesterday urged the public to sign a petition asking President Chen Shui-bian to resign.
“Signing the petition would be the first step for the public to voice their discontent over government corruption,” said KMT Legislator Wu Yu-sheng.
In accordance with the Constitution, a motion to recall the president would need the support of at least two-thirds of the legislature. As the DPP holds more than one-third of the seats in the legislature, such a motion would be unlikely to succeed.
