Opposition attempts to recall Taiwan’s president Chen Shui-bian from office in the wake of an alleged corruption scandal faced a fresh hurdle on Monday after a key party dramatically switched its support back to Mr Chen.
The Taiwan Solidarity Union, a radically pro-independence group with 12 seats in the island’s 220-strong parliament, said it had changed its mind and no longer planned to vote in favour of recalling Mr Chen.
On Friday, after prosecutors indicted Mr Chen’s wife on charges of corruption and said he would also be prosecuted once he leaves office, the TSU said it would support a recall.
The TSU’s move to reverse that pledge reflects the panicky maneuvering triggered by the surprise indictment, which has thrown the island’s political landscape into disarray. [Full Text]
