China Grants U.S. Firms Direct-Selling Licenses – Mei Fong

Chinese authorities have granted Amway Corp. and Mary Kay Inc. direct-selling licenses, ending a years-long wait by the two U.S. companies.

The licenses were granted Friday, according to a statement posted on the Ministry of Commerce Web site. An Amway China representative confirmed the approval. A spokesman for Mary Kay in China couldn’t be reached for comment.

The approvals extend a relaxation of curbs on direct sales that Beijing began last year as part of its obligations for joining the World Trade Organization five years ago. Other direct-sales competitors, including Nu Skin Enterprises Inc., were granted official approval earlier this year. Avon Products Inc. the world’s largest direct-sales company by sales, was granted approval in February.[Full Text]
