It’s a crucial challenge for Australia too. The last thing we want is friction between two of our three biggest economic partners – fortunately, Shinzo Abe, the new Prime Minister of our top partner, Japan, has already headed off the simmering unease between Tokyo and Beijing.
But this will prove quite a challenge even for US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, the former Goldman Sachs chief with long experience of China, and Ben Bernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman he is taking along with him, as well as the cabinet secretaries of commerce, labour, energy, health and human resources, and Trade Representative Susan Schwab.
