China Tells Courts to Toe Party line – Mary-Anne Toy

In an essay in a state-run magazine, Luo Gan, China’s top law and order official, said an independent judiciary was not appropriate, via Age.Com:

China’s security chief, a member of the ruling Politburo, has lashed out at “hostile forces” trying to use the legal system to undermine and westernise China…

China’s court system has been slowly improving its consistency and transparency after the concept of the rule of law was written into the constitution in 1999.

Mr Luo’s essay acknowledged that China was part of the global community, especially leading to next year’s Beijing Olympics. But he wrote that the priority was to guard against “hostile forces (who) have been trying their best to attack and fundamentally transform our judicial system”.
