From Financial Times:
Hong Kong’s air pollution is caused locally rather than by south China’s industrial engines for at least half the year, according to a study released Wednesday.
The territory can therefore do more to fix a chronic problem that is affecting its international standing as a top-tier financial and services centre, it said. “Hong Kong can do a lot to improve its air quality,” said Alex Lau, a professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, who headed the study.
Previous studies have concluded that cities in Guangdong province account for at least 60 per cent of all air pollution generated in the Pearl River Delta region, suggesting that Hong Kong “imports” most of its filthy air and therefore can do little to fix the problem on its own. Donald Tsang, Hong Kong’s chief executive, has said Guangdong is ultimately responsible for “the lion’s share” of Hong Kong’s air pollution.[Full Text]
