For me, the standard formulation (the modern, more sensitively expressed one) for rejecting western democracy can be seen clearly here: “China’s democratic and political construction must go its own way” (even though different cultures can in general terms learn from each other).

After this, he emphasises in a number of different ways that rather than changing the socialist (ie, Party-led) system, changes will come from within the system even as it remains “under socialism”. …

But in reiterating the standard formula of that socialism will be in its initial (flawed) stages for 100 years, Wen is saying you can’t judge the success of socialism yet, Rome wasn’t built in a day, it will be all right in the end – and we’re certainly not giving up. [Full Text]
