The bridge collapse accident in Fenghuang County, west of Hunan Province, stands out as a disastrous accident which grabs media attention across China. By last Friday, the death toll had reached 47, all of which were rural workers who perished in miserable circumstances. Both President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao expressed their special concern on this issue by outlining instructions on how to cope with it. Dozens of domestic media outlets went to Fenghuang to better present a clear and comprehensive picture of the accident to the public.
However, something unbelievable happened in this severe moment: several journalists were set upon and beaten during interviews at a local hotel near the accident. It is believed that their attackers were local government employees. [Full Text]
