German Foreign Minister Visits China as Dust Settles over Tibet Row

On his visit to China, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier tried to smooth out relations between the two countries. From AP:

Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his Chinese counterpart, Yang Jiechi, also said they agreed to restart regular meetings on issues including climate change and human rights, a sign of warming relations between the two countries.

Ties between Beijing and Berlin nose-dived after German Chancellor Angela Merkel invited the Dalai Lama to the chancellery in Berlin last year.

In remarks to reporters after the talks in Beijing, Steinmeier said the two sides discussed conditions in Tibet, which was closed to foreign media and overseas tourists after anti-government rioting in mid-March.

“We talked about the situation in Tibet. We expressed our wish that China meet with the Dalai Lama’s envoy to promote culture in Tibet,” Steinmeier said.
