Directives from the Ministry of Truth: Shifang Fallout

Directives from the Ministry of Truth: Shifang Fallout

The following example of censorship instructions, issued to the media and/or Internet companies by various central (and sometimes local) government authorities, have been leaked and distributed online. Chinese journalists and bloggers often refer to those instructions as “Directives from the Ministry of Truth.” CDT has collected the selections we translate here from a variety of sources and has checked them against official Chinese media reports to confirm their implementation.

This directive was first published by CDT Chinese on July 9.

Beijing Municipal Department of Propaganda: Follow the unified specifications of Xinhua News Agency in reporting on the meeting in which China University of Political Science and Law professor Wu Fatian (real name Wu Danhong) was beaten by the journalist Zhou Yan. Do not maliciously speculate on the incident.

北京市委宣传部:关于中国政法大学副教授吴法天(真名吴丹红)与川籍女记者周燕约架被打一事,按照新华社的统一口径报道,不得恶意炒作。
