US industry is divided over a decision by the Bush administration to file two cases on Monday against China at the World Trade Organisation over restrictions on foreign media and piracy.
The twin cases seek to force Beijing to permit market access for foreign DVDs, CDs, books and software and to protect intellectual property rights better, according to people familiar with the filings.
The actions are indicative of Washington’s new, more confrontational approach to economic relations with Beijing, which will test the durability of carefully cultivated diplomatic ties.[Full Text]
