China to Test Antimalarial Drugs on Island in Africa – David Lague

Li Guoqiao, a professor at the Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, found the plant extract artemisinin to be a very effective cure for malaria some thirty years ago. Now, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, Li plans to offer mass treatments of the antimalarial drugs to the people on the island of Moheli, in hopes that his method will eradicate the disease, rather than merely controlling it. After decades of fighting malaria in a grinding war of attrition, Li Guoqiao and a team of Chinese medical researchers are confident that the world has the weapons to defeat the disease.
