Translated by CDT from China Youth Daily:
China’s environmental watchdog called the names of three multinationals for constantly failing to deliver on their environmental cleanup. The prominently criticized firms are a joint venture decoration materials outlet between Thailand’s CP Group and US’s Omnova Solutions, Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industrials Steel Structure and China’s food and beverage producer Jinmalang (今麦郎).
According to Ma Jun, head of the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs, the number of SEPA-blacklisted multinationals surged from 80-90 a year ago to nearly 300 this year. Ma and his team built up an interactive map to archive and chronicle China’s water and air pollution in various localities and industries. He says many multinationals have double standards when it comes to environment, going low when they have business or manufacturing in China.
More than 50 polluters have contacted Ma and explained about their pollution activities. But still, there’s a lack of true intentions to go green among the firms, many stressing that they are “innocent,” or “it was just a coincidence that our emissions-control facilities broke down while being examined.” [Full Text in Chinese]
