When I was in elementary school, our geography teacher told us how Lanzhou city in the northwest desert area of China had suffered from a water shortage. He said the city relied on the water cart system which supplied water during limited hours for the locals. When it was the time and the water carts came, people rushed, dogs ran and birds dived for the water. This story was etched in my mind.
So many years have passed. But the Lanzhou story popped up in my head again, when I saw these photos of people in Wuhan (next to the Yangtze River) lined up for water. Seniors, adults and children filled the streets holding barrels, pots and bowls in all kinds of shapes to collect water. This time, however, the cause of their water shortage was the recent snowstorm which interrupted their water supply.
