Golden Memories of China’s Godfather of Olympic Passion

The Shanghai Daily reviews a new documentary, “4 Dreams,” about China’s sporting history:

With the opening of the Beijing Olympics just days away, few people realize the role a determined Shanghai man played in helping establish China’s proud Games history. A new television documentary series is lifting the veil on this amazing story, writes Sam Riley.

Thousands of athletes from around the world are converging on Beijing and millions of television viewers will witness the stunning opening ceremony in 11 days.

But few of them will know the story of how one man’s determination more than 75 years ago put China on the path towards hosting the Olympic Games.

Shanghai native Zu-Liang Sung (Shen Siliang in Mandarin) was the first Chinese sports administrator to take one of his country’s athletes to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1932.

His story and his family’s enduring links with the Olympics are told in an eight-episode documentary currently screening on International Channel Shanghai.
