One Dead, Six Injured in South China Village Clash

An 80-year-old feud between villages in Hainan’s Dongfang City erupted on Wednesday, leaving one dead and six injured. From Xinhua:

The fight happened at around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday between several hundred residents of Baoshang and Gancheng villages in Dongfang City.

A 32-year-old Baoshan resident named Zhang Ji died after being stabbed in the head and arms during the fight, said Qin Guangxin, a doctor with Dongfang City Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Three residents in Gancheng and three in Baoshang are injured.

[…]Gancheng has had a troubled relationship with Baoshang over a land dispute for almost eighty years and there have been frequent brawls between residents of both villages — each with a population of about 10,000. The latest clash has been one of the most violent clashes in recent decades as tensions escalate.

Associated Press also details some of the financial losses that occurred due to the fight:

China sees tens of thousands of protests or outbursts of violence every year, often stemming from land disputes or dissatisfaction with local authorities.

The crowd dispersed that night, but the violence caused financial losses of one million yuan (150,000 dollars), according to the Hainan Daily.

More tit-for-tat violence ensued on Tuesday, with more than 100 officials dispatched to the area to try to calm the villagers down and prevent the violence from escalating.
