Beijing’s Songzhuang arts district recently held the “Accidental Phenomenon Arts Festival” for local artists to exhibit their work. During the festival, the performance that garnered the most attention was put on by Beijing-based performance artist Zhou Yongyang, titled, “Apologize to the People,” (向人民道歉). During the performance, according to the Feichang Ribao (非常日报) blog, Zhou said:
Today I want to stage a ceremony to “apologize to the people,” which I hope will establish a pattern of apologizing to the people. Why do I want to do this? Because these days many have wronged the people; as small as stealing the people’s property, and as big as failing to fulfill their serious commitments to the people, etc. In short, my performance is intended as a demonstration for those who have wronged the people and haven’t apologized, or haven’t realized they need to apologize, or those who will not apologize to the people.
