China’s government needs to embrace political transparency and be more open about its military budget to ensure its rising economic and diplomatic power isn’t seen as a threat in Asia, Japan’s foreign minister said.
“I call for China to ensure the same level of transparency as Japan, not just with regard to economic aspects, but with regard to (its) military budget and military activities and, indeed, the broader social and political systems,” Minister of Foreign Affairs Taro Aso, said yesterday in a speech in Tokyo.
