Website on attack over ‘barbaric’ shutdown – Chow Chung-Yan

Operators of a popular mainland website which was shut down by the government for allegedly violating internet regulations fought back yesterday, criticising the authorities’ decision as “barbaric and retrogressive”.

Century China — an internet discussion forum run by Beijing-based Life Week magazine — was a popular hub for commentary on political, cultural and historical issues.

Its operators yesterday said they received a notice from the Beijing Communications Administration on July 25, accusing the website of “illegally providing news information and violating internet regulations”.

The website was forcibly shut down the next day and all postings were removed. Century China yesterday said it had followed official guidelines and never provided any news services during its six years of operation. [Full text]
