Tribute to the Taiwanese People – Impressions Following the Taiwanese Election (3)

Beijing based writer/blogger Dong Guangfu writes on his blog, translated by M.J.:

Such a grand scene, pertaining so many, an event for 23 million Taiwanese! More than 10,000 polling sites, the opposite camps of blue and green, a mobilization of only 60,000 policemen, everything carrying all in peace as desired. There were almost no incidents, chaos, riots…Weren’t there people who assume that democracy would bring instability and disorder? These badmouthers can forever be quiet too.

The Taiwanese people used their own character to prove the essence of democracy. For democracy, election, civil rights, and the dignity and rights of the people, if a system is just, then its people will manifest high qualities that exceed expectations. People are not fools, and are not the root of chaos or unrest. No. If one gives people true respect, such as the the Taiwan elections have given the people the right to vote, giving them dignity in being able to be masters of their own fates, then the people are the most rational.

In contrast, we often see the ruling officials, in the struggle for power, come to serious blows. One would risk his life in perceiving failure at his ambitions, respond with bullets in seeing a loss of benefits, these things have not happened amongst the people.

In fact, we have seen that all these kinds of chaos, riots, and fights erupt under an authoritarian system.

People of a democratic society understands mutual respect; after all, people are the masters, so one cannot expect every opinion, view, or policy to satisfy one’s own will or fit one’s own advantages.

That such a huge event could happen without any commotion is almost incredible, but the Taiwanese people have accomplished as such, and answered all the doubts and rejections of those who fear democracy with reality.

I pay tribute to the peaceful success of this democratic celebration!
