Sichuan’s Earthquake, Six Months Later
The Boston Globe has published a moving photo essay on life in the areas hit by the May 12 earthquake, six months later:
» Read moreSix months ago, China suffered its worst earthquake in a generation. The magnitude 8.0 Sichuan Earthquake erased many mountain towns and villages from the face of the map, with destruction radiating outward leaving millions homeless, over 300,000 injured, nearly 70,000 dead, and over 18,000 people still listed as missing. Now, as winter approaches, reconstruction is well under way, with priority placed on building houses for survivors still living in temporary tents.

Photos: The Sanlu Disaster in Baoji
A poster on the Chinese BBS Tianya has posted some photos of the situation in Baoji, a city in Shaanxi. Selectively translated by CDT:

These days, the maternity and child care ward in Baoji, Shaanxi has been packed due to the milk powder problem; children and parents have been rushing in for treatment.
Pictured is an informational poster for parents of those possibly affected by the “Sanlu milk incident.” The top section outlines general procedure guidelines; the bottom, ureteral stone sonograms.

There’s a sea of people out in front of the treatment facility.
Everyday, a few hundred people stand in line.

They came a long ways to come and wait for the lab results. They’re helpless …

Users had plenty to say in response to the posting.
The Chinese food production chain is a mystery — and not just Sanlu’s. The Sanlu incident is just one sore spot of many.
Innocent children were the ones harmed here. Every time, they’re always the first …
Today’s adults not only neglect to take care of the future generation; they also poison them, from their ideology to their food …
My friend’s baby drank Yili’s A+B baby milk formula. He’s drunk it for 10 months now, and just a few days ago, they found he has kidney stones. I want our country’s Safety and Inspections Department to explain this.
Our own child has been drinking milk formula for about half a year, but hasn’t gotten a check up yet. I was on a business trip, and just got to take a look at him these past two days. Now I’m really scared. What exactly is at the root of Yili’s baby milk formula problem??
How are our country’s enterprises going to restore public confidence??

How is it that the more our country “reforms and opens,” the harder it is to go on living?
All are pursuing money; hearts are now thoroughly rotten.

Someday, China May Look Back at the Edison Chen Scandal and Thank the Man for its Privacy Laws
Beijing-based lawyer Yu Guofu points out, besides the negative influence of the resigned Hong Kong star, Edison Chen’s sex photos scandal, the event in fact suggests that, “there is no privacy protection law in China so far.” From Shanghaiist:
» Read moreChina currently has no privacy laws, but that may change, if lawyer Yu Guofu from the Beijing-based Internet Society of China has his way. In an interview with the China Youth Daily 《中国青年报》, Yu made the following comments:
There is no privacy protection law in China so far, nor is there a single item in any laws and regulations that covers privacy protection… The only mention of privacy is in a judicial explanation by the Supreme Court of China that focused on the protection of the right of reputation… Moreover, there had been scarcely any research on the right of privacy for a long time in China…
Yu advocates drafting China’s first law on privacy protection “as soon as possible” because a strong privacy law could have “prevented the circulation of pornographic photos of leading Hong Kong celebrities having sex with each other”. Look, we are all for the enactment of a privacy law but to say that such a law would have prevented the circulation of those pics is to stretch the truth a bit. Clearly, this guy knows nothing about the nature of the Internet, or the nature of porn, or both. Besides, Bill Gates said so.
