China emerging as potent Net force

This long article is from India Times today: “Internet has so far been dominated by the country of its origin, but now China is fast emerging as the second major power of the digital age.

Internet is booming in China. Consider this: By 2006, it is expected to have more people on the Net and more broadband subscribers than any other nation. Plus, maximum number of cell phone users in the world are in China which gives it a headstart in the convergence era.

More than 22 million new entrants hooked on to the Web in China last year, bringing the total number of online Chinese to 80 million. By 2006, it is expected to overtake the US, with 153 million Chinese going online, estimates investment bank Piper Jaffray & Co. ”
