CHINA has issued long-awaited regulations on human organ transplants aimed at reducing botched operations and improving survival rates. They explicitly ban the sale of body parts, require written permission from donors and introduce medical standards.
An estimated 2 million patients in China need organ transplants each year, but no more than 20,000 occur because of a shortage of donated organs. More than 99 per cent of the 7000 to 8000 kidneys transplanted each year in China come from executed prisoners; the rest come from patients’ relatives or other donors.
