Wu Man, a Pipa Player in Search of the Common Chord – Allan Kozinn

From the New York Times (link):

Just because Wu Man plays the pipa, an ancient Chinese lute, there was no reason to suppose that her program on Thursday evening at Zankel Hall would focus on traditional Chinese music. The concert was, after all, part of the Kronos Quartet‘s “Live Mix” series, and when Kronos is involved, anything goes ” especially anything that involves demolishing musical boundaries or practicing stylistic alchemy. And Ms. Wu has been known to mix things up on her own.

Also see Wu Man’s official web site. Wu has performed and recorded with the Kronos Quartet, Henry Threadgill, and Yo-Yo Ma‘s The Silk Road Ensemble. In 1999, she became the first Chinese musician to play at the White House. She played there, together with Yo-Yo Ma, in honor of Zhu Rongji, the prime minister of China.
