Facing Crisis, Taiwan Announces Flights to China – Keith Bradsher

Facing a political crisis at home, the government here unexpectedly announced today that it had reached a deal with Beijing for numerous charter flights to and from mainland China.

The agreement is the latest of several signs that impeachment proceedings against President Chen Shui-bian could have the important side effect of thawing relations between Taipei and Beijing.

Chartered passenger flights had previously been allowed only during Chinese New Year in 2003, 2005 and this year, and were not allowed in 2004 because of controversy leading up to presidential elections here that year. Chartered cargo and humanitarian flights have not been allowed until now. [Full Text]
