 41773294 Duck Getty203Most Shenzhen residents are ignorant of the city’s first reported case of human bird flu infection, with the official media playing down the incident.

In Anliang village in the Longgang district, where a 31-year-old truck driver was found to have been infected with an H5 strain of flu, neighbours said they learned of the case only when they watched TV news from Hong Kong.

“Some health officials came yesterday and inspected the house,” said a woman who lives near the family. “They ordered workers to clean up the area but did not explain to us what had happened. We found out [about the bird flu] only after we watched the Hong Kong TV news. We are worried.” [Full text]

China confirmed on Thursday that a 31 year-old man in the southern city of Shenzhen had the H5N1 virus.

Some experts believe the virus is more of a threat in cooler, winter months.

“We are concerned whether the virus has mutated so that the infection rate has become equally high all year around,” Health Minister York Chow said. [Full text]
