Happiness Index and More: Stats Bureau – China News

kouhuku11.jpg After a failure of working out a green GDP scheme spearheaded by SEPA, now the National Bureau of Statistics is coming up with some watered down versions, from China News Agency via sina.com, translated by CDT:

During a Q&A session today, Minister Qiu Xiaohua of the state’s statistics agency said China will work out happiness index, human’s overall development index, regional innovation index and social harmony index, in order to meet needs in those areas.

The Bureau will work around the strategic demand of “scientific development” that puts “people first” and emphasizes “coordinated sustainable development” on these new indices, Qiu said. New efforts will also be made in tallying the developments in “san nong,” or peasants, agriculture and countryside under the initiative to build a “new socialist countryside.”

Qiu also said that his bureau worked together a few days ago on green GDP accounting and today with the quality assurance administration on manufacturing industry competitiveness index. [Full Text in Chinese]
