Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Wednesday said it would back scandal-plagued President Chen Shui-bian to ensure he survived a fresh opposition motion to oust him.
With the consensus — reached at a meeting of the central executive committee — the DPP’s 85 legislators were ordered to boycott the third recall motion engineered by the opposition, the party said.
“In order to maintain social stability, the central executive committee has decided to object the third recall motion,” DPP Chairman Yu Shyi-kun told reporters.
“Any party members found violating the decision would be disciplined in accordance with party rules.” [Full Text]
