Slideshow: Crackdown in Longquan

Longquan village in Henan province is considered a “national-level civilized village,” a distinction awarded in honor of its productive farms and profitable private enterprises. All of Longquan’s accomplishments amounted to little, however, when a demolition team made up of local officials, police and soldiers marched into the village to clear land for a 30-meter wide highway. The demolition team is said to have destroyed 65 houses with residents’ belongings still inside and trampled 230 mu (23,000 square meters) farmland still pregnant with crops.
