Beijing based writer/blogger Dong Guangfu writes on his blog, translated by M.J.:
Thus far, those who have been clamoring that the Chinese people are of lower quality, and not suitable for engaging in democracy can forever hold their peace. Taiwan’s presidential election has provided the most classic model for democracy; its wonders even outshining those systems of Western nations. The Chinese people have never lacked talent, from selecting the top-notch candidate as “Super-Girl” out of a thousand aspiring young women, to electing the Taiwan leadership based on the victory of the people’s will, every lens testifies to the foresight and wisdom of the people.
Thus far, we can be more certain, apart from those voices of the ruling party and its disciples, who claim “not suitable for democracy,” can these voices arise from real people who possess the wisdom to choose their own spokesperson?
That’s impossible!
It is because people have been deprived of such a right and have been framed to endure humiliation again and again, that they’ve come to be seen as lacking in quality.
Even if they do lack quality, it would still be the product of an ignorant education.
In reality, even the “ignorant masses” cannot cause a people to lose the most basic sense of good and evil. The only rational explanation is: the deprivation of rights!
The good news is that the Taiwan people have proved: Chinese people are completely capable and competent in their abilities to execute ad democratic system.
Today’s process demonstrating the people’s will, the strength of the vote, completely reflected the people’s quality, people’s foresight, people’s wisdom, and people’s vision…not some impossible miracle, even democracy can be done in a spectacular manner.
That is the Chinese people.
