From the China Elections and Governance:
A clash of opinions has recently broken out in the Chinese online community. A renowned Chinese author Yu Qiuyu has urged the parents of the students who died in the earthquake to stop their protest against the government, as he fears that these angry parents might be “used by anti-Chinese forces”. While some agreed with Yu’s viewpoint, many Chinese people criticized Yu’s argument by claiming he was “being used by corrupt officials”, whose thoughts were “remnants of the Cultural Revolution”.
Approximately 9000 children were killed in schools toppled by the earthquake, which many believe were poorly built by contractors who paid off the building inspectors.
Here is an English translation of Yu’s article on the China Elections website.
