Minitrue: Don’t Hype Mining Accident Swindlers

The following censorship instruction, issued to the media by government authorities, has been leaked and distributed online. The name of the issuing body has been omitted to protect the source.

Don’t continue to hype news of the 21 migrant workers who killed 4 people in fake mining accidents. (July 7, 2014)

对于21名农民工杀4人伪造矿难事故一事不要继续炒作。

A three-part investigative report [Chinese] in the July 4 edition of South Reviews Magazine (南风窗) covered a gang of 21 migrant workers, mostly from Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, who had staged accidents at iron mines in Hebei in order to collect compensation. The gang allegedly killed four workers and swindled nearly 1,850,000 yuan in compensation between 2011 and 2012

CDT collects directives from a variety of sources and checks them against official Chinese media reports to confirm their implementation.

Since directives are sometimes communicated orally to journalists and editors, who then leak them online, the wording published here may not be exact. The date given may indicate when the directive was leaked, rather than when it was issued. CDT does its utmost to verify dates and wording, but also takes precautions to protect the source.
