All video websites are kindly asked to immediately remove the September 7, 2014 episode of “Mr. Bole’s Weidou Show.” (September 15, 2014)
Ai Weiwei, the artist and dissident who was detained for 81 days in 2011, appeared for mere seconds on a late-night segment. Interviewees were asked to summarize their youth in one word. Ai chose “sleepiness” (昏睡). South China Morning Post has translated the segment, which was quickly scrubbed from the CCTV website.
Since directives are sometimes communicated orally to journalists and editors, who then leak them online, the wording published here may not be exact. The date given may indicate when the directive was leaked, rather than when it was issued. CDT does its utmost to verify dates and wording, but also takes precautions to protect the source.
