In his latest cartoon, Badiucao comments on the recent kerfuffle in Washington over senator and Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz’s efforts to rename the street in front of the Chinese embassy in Washington “Liu Xiaobo Plaza,” in honor of the imprisoned activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate:
Liu Xiaobo Plaza, by Badiucao for CDT:
In Badiucao’s version, all signs for Liu Xiaobo Plaza point to Tiananmen Square. Liu is a veteran writer and activist who returned to Beijing from the U.S. to join the 1989 protest movement, and later co-drafted Charter 08, a pro-democracy manifesto, for which he was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2009. In 2010, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
The White House has vowed to veto efforts to rename the Washington plaza.
