China Urges More Food Safety Standards – Audra Ang

Chinese food safety officials are calling for more stringent inspections and testing of exports in the country’s latest push to improve its image amid international alarm over the quality of its products.

Li Changjiang, the head of China’s main food safety agency, said the measures were a “political responsibility” that needed to be taken by all levels of government.

“Food safety is not only a problem related to law enforcement but also related to the people’s health and safety, the country’s image, and also bilateral and multilateral political relationships,” said Li, director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
