Ministry of Truth: Xinjiang Violence

The following  instructions, issued to the media by government authorities, have been leaked and distributed online. Chinese journalists and bloggers often refer to these instructions as “.”

State Council Information Office: Media and websites are only to republish domestic Xinhua News Agency wire copy regarding the riot in Shanshan County, Turpan [Prefecture], Xinjiang [Uyghur Autonomous Region]. Material from other sources must be removed without exception. Close forum threads, strictly control interactive platforms, and delete harmful contents which sow or spread rumors, contain bloody images, or seize the opportunity to attack the Party and the government.

27 people are dead after crowds attacked a police station and other government offices yesterday. The police opened fire, killing at least 10. The motive for the riot is still unclear, but ethnic tension is high in the majority Uyghur region. Coverage by Xinhua, a state-run news agency, is different for domestic and foreign audiences.

CDT has collected the selections we translate here from a variety of sources and has checked them against official Chinese media reports to confirm their implementation.

Since directives are sometimes communicated orally to journalists and editors, who then leak them online, the wording published here may not be exact. The original publication date on CDT Chinese is noted after the directives; the date given may indicate when the directive was leaked, rather than when it was issued. CDT does its utmost to verify dates and wording, but also takes precautions to protect the source.
